# Technician Productivity and Pay: Aligning Incentives With Profit

**Short answer:** Technicians are the engine of a home services business and its biggest cost. Measuring productivity fairly and paying in a way that rewards profitable work, not just volume, improves margins and retention. The best plans are simple enough for technicians to understand and are modeled before rollout.

## How to measure technician productivity

- **Revenue per billable hour:** how much each hour on the job produces.
- **Billable hours as a share of paid hours:** how much of the day is spent on revenue work.
- **Average ticket:** the value of each job.
- **Callback rate:** quality of the work.
- **Conversion and add-on rate:** how often visits lead to more work.
