# Capital Expenditure Planning: How to Evaluate Equipment Investments

**Short answer:** New equipment and automation can raise capacity, cut labor costs and improve quality, but they also commit a lot of cash for years. A disciplined capital plan compares projects on payback, return and risk, ties spending to the cash forecast and chooses the right financing before you sign the purchase order.

## How to evaluate an investment

| Measure | What it answers |
| --- | --- |
| Payback period | How quickly the investment returns its cost |
| Return on investment | How much return it generates relative to cost |
| Net present value | Whether it creates value after accounting for the time value of money |
| Internal rate of return | The project's effective annual return |

## What to include in the analysis

- Full installed cost, including training, downtime and integration
- Labor savings and capacity gains, based on realistic assumptions
- Maintenance, energy and consumables
- Effect on quality, scrap and customer service
- Tax considerations such as depreciation, reviewed with your CPA
